Madge Tennent
Madge Tennent was both well trained and well traveled before she arrived in Hawaii in 1923. She was born Madeline Cook in Doulwich, England, in 1889. When she was five she moved with her family to Cape Town, South Africa.

Lionel Walden
Lionel Walden was born in Norwich, Connecticut, on May 22, 1861, but spent his early years in various cities before going to Minnesota, where his father served as the rector of an Episcopal church. There Walden first became interested in art. Later, in Paris, he studied under E. A. Carolus-Duran and became as adept at figure painting as he later would be at seascapes.

Charles W. Bartlett
Born in Bridgport, Dorsetshire, England, on June 1, 1860, Charles W. Bartlett first trained as a chemist but took up art full-time in 1883 and studied at the Royal Academy in London and the Julian Academy in Paris. He became well known in Holland and Brittany for his watercolors and etchings. The Orient was his second source of inspiration, and many of his subjects were drawn from India and China.

Jules Tavernier
Although Jules Tavernier worked fewer than five years in Hawaii, he is often thought of as the premier interpreter of the volcano. Born in Paris in April 1844, he said that his parents were of English descent and "belonged to one of the old Huguenot families." Tavernier spent his youth in London, then returned to Paris to live with relatives.

D. Howard Hitchcock
David Howard Hitchcock was born in Hilo, Hawaii, on May 15, 1861. After studying painting in Paris, he returned to Hawaii late in 1893 and began a serious examination of its landscape. His finest period as a landscapist was from about 1905 to 1930. During extensive travels in the 1900's, Hitchcock explored the volcanic regions of the island of Hawaii.
